Juneteenth: Let America Be America Again by Langston Hughes
A poem for today written in 1935
Langston Hughes wrote “Let America Be America Again” in 1935 to critique the unfulfilled promises of the American Dream amid racial and economic inequality. Hughes composed the poem during the Great Depression, a period of widespread unemployment and poverty in the United States. While the nation faced economic collapse Hughes reflected on the disparity between the American Dream and the lived reality of marginalized groups, including African Americans, Native Americans, immigrants, and poor white communities. The poem captures the frustration of those who had been systematically denied freedom, opportunity, and equality, highlighting the gap between national ideals and social realities.
Read it out loud to yourself. So pertinent for today.

Memorial Day Remembrance: Listen to The Greenfields of France
Memorial Day, in the United States, holiday (last Monday in May) honoring those who have died while serving in the country’s armed forces. It originated during the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. The first national observance was in 1868. After World War I, the name was changed to Memorial Day, and in 1971 it became a federal holiday. The day is observed by visits to cemeteries, where flags and other items are placed on the graves of veterans.
