Moment + Movement = Success

~ Stan Johnson, County Party Chairman

What a moment we had on Saturday, October 18th in Algoma. It was a sight for sore eyes as like-minded people began arriving from all directions, eager to participate in the ‘NO Kings’ rally at the Algoma Legion Park. The weather was perfect, complementing the energy, spirit, and camaraderie that filled the air as people greeted one another. During the two hours we spent together, we chanted, displayed our signs for all to read, waved our flags with pride, and exchanged thumbs up with supportive passersby who honked in encouragement for those standing up for democracy. Special recognition goes to Laura, Renee, and Colleen for their dedication and hard work in organizing this important rally.

Embracing the Power of Taking Action

This moment left people feeling good about the event and themselves; for many, it sparked the courage to say, “Enough is enough—I need to do something!” However, if we stop here, this will remain just a moment, a memory to cherish.  We need to recognize that what we are facing cannot end here if we want to change things.

To create real change, we must transform this moment into a movement.

While this may push us outside our comfort zones, isn’t our country worth the extra effort—for democracy, for those who served and fought to make our nation free, and for the freedom to choose our leaders and determine the issues that affect our future and that of our families, children, friends, relatives, and neighbors who deserve to live in peace and harmony?

Turning Inspiration into Lasting Change

Now is the time to turn this moment into a movement and help achieve the success we envision for everyone in Kewaunee County, in Wisconsin, and in the United States. As Thurgood Marshall said, “Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.”

How You Can Help Move from Moment to Movement

•               Attend the One Year to Win fundraising dinner

•               Participate in a Speaking for Democracy event

•               Canvass door to door, make phone calls, become a poll worker

•               Work on a campaign, join the party, assist with this newsletter or technology

•               And most importantly—VOTE!

Upcoming Opportunities

NEW FORMAT, NEW LOCATION PLANNED FOR ANNUAL DINNER

The Democratic Party of Kewaunee County holds only two fundraisers a year, our summer gathering and our “One Year to Win” fundraiser. This year we're taking a slightly different approach for our fundraiser focusing more on the social, entertainment, aspect.  We will be joined by comedian Mike Marvell and hold a live auction.

Just like our home budgets, putting money in the bank for “rainy” days is part of a healthy home maintenance and financial plan.  The 2026 midterms, as Stan mentioned, are not going to win themselves.  It will take a huge effort to turn public out-cry into votes; both in terms of human and financial resources.  A CNBC article published in June found that the Republican National Party had five times the amount of cash on hand compared to the Democrats.  It’s no secret that our state and local candidates are also significantly out-spent by their GOP competition!

We hope you will consider attending or donating to build our bank for the launch of the campaign season this coming spring.

Watch our action alerts, website and our Facebook page for updates.  If you would like to donate an item for the Auction, email us at kcdpwi@gmail.com.

COMMUNITY FORUM ON IMMIGRATION MYTHS SET

The date and time are set for the community forum “Immigration: Fact vs Fiction” organized by the Coalition for Humanitarian Immigration in cooperation with Voces de la Frontera and hosted by the Algoma United Methodist Church.

All community members are encouraged to attend this important discussion November 9th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Algoma United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 804 Parker Ave, Algoma.

The Forum will address the most frequently asked questions and concerns surrounding the current immigration crisis, focusing on the humanitarian and economic impacts. Presenters will utilize national and statewide data, as well as information gathered from community leaders and experts directly involved with immigration issues in Kewaunee County.

“By debunking myths about immigrants and immigration, our Coalition hopes to reduce unfounded fears and promote policies that keep our community safe and our economy thriving,” stated Barb Rodgers, one of the Coalition leaders.

Please note that the Coalition is strategically non-partisan.  Attendees are asked to respect that decision both in attire and discussions.

GIVE BACK AS A THANK YOU TO VETERANS!

Original Algoma “ANTIFA” on Second St, circa 1945. The Parins brothers along with their parents Oliver and Rose.

In support of all of those who served, we encourage support of the “GIVE BACK to Veterans” event being held on Saturday November 8th at the Ahnapee Brewing Co at Second and Clark in Algoma.  Ahnapee will be donating a dollar for every pint sold of their popular Little Soldier ale to the “Fox Valley Veterans Council Emergency Fund”.  Algoma VFW will be serving up burgers and brats with proceeds also going to the cause.

Having the taproom full of Democrats, visibly supporting our Vets, speaks volumes.

POLL WORKERS NEEDED – TRAINING OFFERED

Serve your community and protect democracy by becoming a poll worker for the 2026-2027 election cycle! In Kewaunee County, having a Democrat present in the polling locations provides balance.  Whether it is verifying town election counts or ensuring there is no illegal “electioneering” or interference, working the polls and helping your neighbors cast their ballots is one of the most impactful ways to support voting rights in your community. Wisconsin Democratic Party is conducting 30-minute Info Sessions to learn more about being a poll worker for 2026-2027!  Sign up now at https://wisdems.org/poll-worker-info/

EPIC TURNOUT FOR NO KINGS 2

Algoma was part of the largest peaceful protest in American history. Mobilization efforts such as this are increasing around the country with expanding coordination between counties right here in northeast Wisconsin. Congratulations go out to “Vocal Locals” and their successful organization of the No Kings 2 demonstration on October 18th.

While the drone photo from the beginning of the event shows a growing crowd, organizers stopped counting at 411 participants.  Nationwide the protestors numbered over 7 million with no reported arrests.

Organizer Renee Paplham wants everyone to “Stay tuned for more events and action items coming soon”.
